Square Dancing 101

Forget everything you think you know about square dancing.

No hay bales. No costumes. No memorizing. Modern square dancing is a social, brain-tickling, laugh-out-loud team activity, and one of the easiest ways to make friends in Raleigh.

One square = eight dancers in four pairs. Any two people can be a pair.

The basics

Eight people. One square. Endless ways to move.

A square is eight dancers standing in four pairs, each pair facing the middle. A caller (that’s Eva) calls out moves in time to the music, and the whole square moves together, like a puzzle that keeps rearranging itself.

Every move has a simple name, like circle left or promenade. Learn a handful and you can dance to almost anything. And because the caller tells you what to do next, you never have to remember a routine.

Speak square

The caller says it. Here’s what it means.

Myth vs. reality

Square dancing has an image problem. Let’s fix that.

“It’s old-fashioned.”
Modern square dancing is set to all kinds of music, from Motown to pop. If it has a beat, you can dance to it.
“You need a partner.”
You don’t. Plenty of people come alone, and they’re never alone for long.
“You have to be a good dancer.”
If you can walk and listen, you can square dance. The caller does the remembering for you.
“It’s a bit… country.”
Wear jeans, sneakers or your favorite T-shirt. There’s no dress code and definitely no hay.
“It’s secretly a dating thing.”
It’s a friendship thing. No pairing up, no pressure, no agenda.

Why people love it

A real brain workout

Reacting to calls in real time keeps your mind sharp. It’s a puzzle you solve with your feet.

Gentle, sneaky cardio

Two hours of walking and turning adds up, at whatever pace suits you.

Friends, fast

Working as a team of eight breaks the ice faster than small talk ever could.

Screen-free fun

No phones, no scrolling. Just music, movement and the people in front of you.

Anyone dances with anyone

We teach positions, not genders.

Traditional square dancing assigned roles by gender. At Capital Squares, every dancer can take any position, so you can dance with whoever’s next to you: a friend, your partner or someone you met five minutes ago.

That means nobody waits on the sidelines for the “right” partner, and everyone gets to learn the whole dance.
