FAQ

Questions? We’ve got answers.

Everything newcomers ask us, answered honestly. Can’t find yours? Ask us directly.

No. Most people think you do, but you don’t. Come on your own and you’ll dance with everyone in the room. If you come as a couple, you’re welcome to dance together or mix it up.

Yes! If you can walk and listen, you can square dance. The caller tells you every move as it happens, so there’s nothing to memorize. Beginner Party Night is designed for complete first-timers.

You’ll be fine. Square dancing is mostly walking in time to the music, and the people in your square will help you along. Honestly, nobody notices. They’re concentrating on their own feet.

Yes. We teach positions, not genders, so anyone can dance any part with anyone. You’ll never be left waiting for the “right” partner.

No. It’s a social activity for everyone: singles, couples and groups of friends. There’s no pairing up and no agenda, just people having fun together.

Absolutely, and lots of people do. Square dancing is one of the easiest places to arrive solo, because you’re part of a team of eight from the very first dance.

Please do! Just make sure each person has a ticket or is included in your RSVP, so we know how many squares to plan for.

You’ll be welcomed at the door, join a square and learn your first moves within about ten minutes. There’s a break to chat, more dancing and lots of laughing. See the full plan for the night.

Beginner Party Night is $10, and the first night of the Beginner Series is $10. You can buy tickets ahead on Eventbrite, or RSVP and pay at the door with cash, check or card.

If you decide to keep going, the full 12 weeks Beginner Series is $96 in total, including your $10 first night. Pay the remaining $86 in one payment or two.

Yes. Come to the first lesson night for $10 and see how it feels. You don’t need to commit to the full series until you’ve tried it, and if you keep going, that first night counts toward the $96 total.

No. Party Night is a fun, no-pressure taster, but you’re welcome to start right at the first lesson night. No experience needed either way.

Please do! Party Night is a relaxed taster, and the first lesson night starts the Beginner Series. You can RSVP for both in one go, or buy a ticket for each on Eventbrite.

We recommend it. A ticket or RSVP helps us plan enough squares, and it means we’ll have a name tag waiting for you.

Comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes with smooth soles, like sneakers or flats. No costumes, cowboy boots or gingham required (unless that’s your thing).

It’s mostly walking, with plenty of breaks. You can go at your own pace and sit out any dance whenever you like. If you have mobility questions, get in touch and we’ll talk it through.

Our dancers are adults of all ages. If you’d like to bring a teenager, please contact us first.

No. We rent the hall at St. James United Methodist Church, but Capital Squares isn’t a religious group, and everyone is welcome.

Free parking in the church lot. Park in the rear parking lot next to the playground.

St. James United Methodist Church, 3808 St. James Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.

If you enjoyed it, come to the first night of our Beginner Series: same night of the week, same place, same friendly group. It’s $10, and there’s no pressure to sign up for the full series on the spot.
